Lauren Chan began her career as a plus-size model in New York City, where she continues to walk the runways for some of the biggest names in fashion. She later worked as an industry-leading fashion writer and editor at magazines like Glamour and Vogue, where she focused her work on advocating for size inclusion, becoming a pioneer in bringing plus-size fashion to mainstream media.
In 2019, Lauren launched Henning, her own brand of luxury clothing for women size 12 and up — and in early 2023, Henning was acquired by Universal Standard. Thanks to her history-making appearance as the first queer, plus-size model in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue that same year, Chan is navigating a new chapter as a public figure. Just as she had with size-inclusion, she is using her platform to call for the increased inclusion of LGBTQ+ folks in media.
For her work as a journalist, model, and entrepreneur. Chan is the recipient of awards like the Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards’ Model of the Year, Toronto Life’s 50 Most Influential Canadians, Refinery29’s 2024 Powerhouses, Marie Claire’s 2023 Power List, the Condé Nast Business Accelerator Award, Create & Cultivate 100, and more.
How do you define a model?
… as a person who helps others who identify with them feel represented and, more importantly, celebrated.
